HIPAA: YOU CAN DO NEWSLETTERS!

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was passed in 1996. Part of that Act is a Privacy Rule that covers the sharing of a patient's medical records and other information.

Since April 2003, patients have been able to rely on national standards with regard to protecting their medical records; however, these standards should not hamper a patient's access to health care.

Because Attitude provides newsletters for many health-care practitioners—physicians, dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and optometrists—we wanted to keep you abreast of the ways the Privacy Rule might affect you in your marketing efforts. The final rule allows doctors free communication with their patients concerning health information, such as that found in newsletters, in addition to treatment options and disease management. We think you'll be as relieved as we are to know that your patients will have the privacy they deserve with regard to their medical records, and that your rights to communicate freely with your patients will not be abridged by this rule.
